Coco Gauff first round exit, Relaxed Ruud and Chaos at Wimbledon

Hey hey, the daily serve here. We’re the daily tennis newsletter that just like the rain at Wimbledon, keeps coming and coming and coming.
Today, here’s what we’ve got for you:
Coco is a go-gone 👋
Ruud’s relaxed run-up 😎🏖️
Chaos in queue ⏰☔️🎥
Coco is a go-go 👋
Coco Gauff, was the first surprise (but not surprise) exist from day one of Wimbledon. The number 7 seed was beaten by fellow American Sofia Kenin.
The first round match definitely lived up to its hype, going the 3 set distance. Gauff knew the danger that her compatriot posed, as Kenin is no nobody. The former world no.4 has been battling injuries and coaching changes for the past few years, but is no stranger to performing in the biggest tournaments having won the Australian Open in 2020 and reaching the final of the French Open the same year.
"I knew it was going to be a tough first round for me. I tried my best, but it wasn't enough," said Gauff.
Kenin, who was “proud” of her performance, moves on to face Xinyu Wang of China in the next round. While Gauff, who its hard to believe is still only 19 will do what 19 year olds do, wait what do 19 year olds do these days? 🤷♀️

Ruud’s relaxed run-up 😎🏖️
No one, is expecting Ruud to do well at Wimbledon. Not even Ruud himself.
Which means, the Norwegian is taking a relaxed approach to this year’s Championships. Instead of trying to adapt his game to grass, scrambling around the European grasscourt lead-up tournaments, Ruud instead has been scrambling around the golf course and partying it up at Weeknd concerts.
After winning his first round match against Frenchman Laurent Lokoli in 4 sets, Ruud talked about his summer vacations in relation to his motivation for Wimbledon:
“It doesn’t mean that I take Wimbledon not serious enough. I really like to perform well here. But it’s just a matter of physically being ready, and being ready for the second part of the season.”
To be honest, we can’t blame Ruud for his playboy approach. He has a pretty miserable record at SW19, winning only 4 out of his 9 appearances and never making it past the second round. And it also doesn’t help that he is allergic to grass because of a pollen allergy. Hilarious.
Anyways, next up he plays against Brit Liam Broady. It’s Playboy vs Homeboy!

Chaos in queue ⏰☔️🎥
Wimbledon can’t catch a break. After threats from ‘Just Stop Oil’ protesters attacking event, to open letters from Emma Watson against their Barclays partnership, Wimbledon was hoping for the first day of the tournament to wash away all their worries. Did the get what they wished for? Nope.
The first day saw supporters queue for up to 10 hours to get in because of increased security measures. Rain tormented the tennis championships in short, sharp bursts, all day long too. Then technical problems affected television coverage of the opening matches.
Wimbledon seemed helpless in the face of all the problems. At one point they even had players drying the courts in order to keep the Championship on schedule.
But as they say Wimbledon, things can only get better from here…
